Prof. Nascimento-Carvalho is a pediatrician, infectious disease specialist and researcher. She was awarded her MD and PhD degrees from the Federal University of Bahia School of Medicine (UFBA-FMB), in Salvador, Bahia, Northeast Brazil. She received her infectious disease training at the Federal University of São Paulo, in São Paulo, Southeast Brazil following which she returned to UFBA-FMB as a faculty member within the Department of Pediatrics. She runs the Pediatric Infectious Disease Unit at the Federal University of Bahia Hospital. She founded and led the Postgraduate Program in Health Sciences at UFBA-FMB for 6 years and is a senior investigator at the Brazilian Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). She is now a Full Professor of Pediatrics at UFBA-FMB). Up to 2018, 14 Master of Science students and 11 PhD students concluded their courses under Prof. Nascimento-Carvalho´s orientation. By the beginning of 2018, she published 118 papers in journals indexed in PubMed. Her primary research interests are in the area of acute respiratory infections, with emphasis to community-acquired pneumonia.
